Meta Ad Rejections/Grammar & Profanity

Meta Ad Rejected for Grammar and Profanity: What It Means and How to Fix It

This is the least serious rejection Meta issues and one of the most common. It is almost never about swearing - it is about capitals, symbols, spacing, and characters used for emphasis. Here is exactly what the filter looks for.

Updated 13 August 2026

What does this Meta rejection message mean?

Your ad wasn't approved because it doesn't comply with Meta's Advertising Standards on Grammar and Profanity. Ads must not contain profanity, or use grammar and punctuation incorrectly, including excessive capitalisation, symbols, or unnecessary repetition.

Wording varies slightly by ad and account. Policy: Grammar and Profanity.

What it actually means

Meta's review found the formatting unprofessional: SHOUTING CAPS, repeated punctuation, emoji used as letters, or symbol substitution. Censored profanity counts too - masking a word with asterisks does not clear the filter, it confirms it. The fix is mechanical, and re-review is usually fast.

Why your ad was rejected

These are the formatting patterns that most often trip this filter.

  • Excessive capitalisation for emphasis

    “GET YOUR FREE TRIAL NOW”

    The most common grammar trigger

  • Repeated or decorative punctuation

    “Limited spots!!! Don't miss out???”

A very frequent trigger across every vertical

  • Symbol or emoji substitution inside words

    “S@ve big - 50% 0ff t0day”

Commonly flagged, and can also read as circumvention

  • Censored or masked profanity

    “This s**t actually works”

Frequently flagged - masking does not clear the filter

  • Nonstandard spacing or character stretching

    “S A L E - H U R R Y”

A steady trigger in promo-heavy creative

Masked profanity is still profanity under the policy; removing it entirely is the only reliable fix.

How to fix and resubmit

  1. 1Rewrite headlines and body text in sentence case, capitalising only proper nouns and acronyms.
  2. 2Reduce punctuation to one exclamation mark at most, and remove decorative question marks entirely.
  3. 3Remove emoji and symbols used inside words, and keep any remaining emoji out of the first line.
  4. 4Delete profanity, including masked or partially censored forms, from both text and creative.
  5. 5Edit and resubmit the same ad - re-review is automatic and typically decided within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use emoji in Meta ads at all?

Yes, in moderation and as ordinary punctuation-level decoration. What triggers the policy is emoji replacing letters or words, or strings of emoji used for emphasis in place of text.

Does masking a swear word with asterisks make it compliant?

No. Meta treats masked profanity as profanity, and the masking itself is an additional signal. Remove the word rather than obscuring it.

Is this rejection damaging to my account?

It is the lowest-stakes rejection in the system and affects the individual ad, not account standing. Repeated formatting flags across a whole account are worth fixing at template level, but they carry no lasting penalty.

Why did one variant get rejected and another approved?

Each creative and text combination is reviewed separately, so a single non-compliant headline in a dynamic ad can be rejected while the rest run normally. Check the variant-level status rather than rewriting everything.

Do the same rules apply on Instagram?

Yes. Meta's Advertising Standards apply identically across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network, so the same formatting will be rejected everywhere.
