Google Ad Disapprovals/Circumventing Systems

Google Ad Disapproved for Circumventing Systems: What It Means and How to Fix It

This is the one disapproval to take seriously immediately. Google is saying it believes you tried to evade its review, not merely that a rule was broken. Most advertisers who see it were not cheating - they used a workaround that looks like cheating. Here is how to tell the two apart and clear it before the account is suspended.

The exact disapproval message

Your ad was disapproved for Circumventing systems. Google does not allow advertisers to engage in practices that attempt to circumvent its advertising systems and processes, including cloaking, manipulating text or images to evade review, and using redirects that lead to content different from what was reviewed.

Wording varies slightly by ad and account. Policy: Circumventing systems.

What it actually means

Google's systems concluded that the ad, the site, or the account was engineered to show reviewers one thing and users another. Character substitution, text embedded in images, geo-based redirects, and doorway pages all produce this signal. Unlike other policies, enforcement here can jump straight to suspension without a warning, so treat it as urgent.

Why your ad was disapproved

These are the patterns most often read as an attempt to evade review.

  • Character substitution to dodge keyword filters

    “Fr33 tri4l - no cred1t card”

    The most common accidental trigger

  • Cloaking - reviewers and users see different pages

“A geo or user-agent redirect that serves a clean page to Google”

The highest-risk trigger and the usual cause of suspension

  • Restricted claims placed inside images or video

“A guaranteed-income promise shown only in the creative, not the text”

Increasingly flagged as image review has improved

  • Redirect chains or destinations changed after approval

“An approved URL that later forwards to a different offer”

A frequent trigger in affiliate and tracking-heavy setups

  • Recreating disapproved ads or accounts to get around a block

“Rebuilding a suspended campaign under a new account”

Treated as deliberate evasion, and usually results in suspension

Before and after rewrites

Rejected

Fr33 tri4l - no cred1t card required

Compliant

Free 14-day trial. No card required.

Writes the words normally. If the plain version breaks another policy, fix that policy - do not disguise it.

Rejected

Guaranteed income (claim shown only in the banner image)

Compliant

Freelance work marketplace. Earnings vary by project and hours.

Brings the claim into reviewable text and removes the guarantee, which was the underlying violation.

Rejected

example.com/go?offer=42 forwarding to a different landing page

Compliant

A single stable destination that matches the reviewed URL.

Removes the redirect mismatch that reads as cloaking, even when the tracking was innocent.

How to fix and resubmit

  1. 1Stop editing and resubmitting immediately - repeated resubmissions of the same setup deepen the evasion signal.
  2. 2Load your landing page from the countries and devices you target, with a fresh session. If any of them see different content from the reviewed page, that is your cause.
  3. 3Write every restricted word normally and remove all character substitutions, spacing tricks, and text hidden inside images.
  4. 4Audit your redirect and tracking chain so the final destination matches the reviewed URL for all users.
  5. 5Fix the underlying policy violation that prompted the workaround, then appeal with a short factual explanation of what changed instead of resubmitting silently.

Frequently asked questions

Can this suspend my account without warning?

Yes. Circumventing systems is one of the egregious violations where Google can suspend an account immediately and without prior warning. That is what separates it from ordinary disapprovals, and why it should be handled before anything else in the account.

I was not trying to cheat - why was this flagged?

Detection is behavioural, not intent-based. Innocent setups produce the same fingerprint: a geo-redirect for language, a tracking template that changes the destination, or leetspeak used for style. The system sees a mismatch between what it reviewed and what users receive.

Does A/B testing my landing page count as cloaking?

Not on its own. Split testing is acceptable when all variants comply with policy and users are assigned randomly. It becomes cloaking when the variant shown depends on whether the visitor looks like a reviewer or a crawler.

Should I appeal or rebuild the campaign?

Appeal. Rebuilding under a new campaign or account is itself treated as circumvention and turns a recoverable disapproval into a permanent suspension. Fix the cause, then appeal from the existing account.

How long does an appeal take?

Ordinary disapproval appeals are typically decided within a few business days, and suspension appeals take longer because they are reviewed manually. Submitting a clear description of what you changed shortens the cycle more than resubmitting repeatedly does.
