Google Ad Disapprovals/Alcohol

Google Ad Disapproved for Alcohol: What It Means and How to Fix It

Alcohol is a restricted category rather than a prohibited one, so most advertisers can run - but only inside country eligibility, age targeting, and a narrow set of claims. Copy that links drinking to success, health, or driving is out everywhere. Here is what clears review and what does not.

The exact disapproval message

Your ad was disapproved under the Alcohol policy. Google restricts the promotion of alcoholic beverages and drinks that resemble alcohol. Ads must comply with local laws and industry standards, must not target minors, and must not imply that alcohol has therapeutic benefits or improves social or professional standing.

Wording varies slightly by ad and account. Policy: Alcohol.

What it actually means

Either you are targeting a country where alcohol advertising is not permitted at all, your campaign is not set up to exclude under-age audiences, or the copy makes a claim about what drinking does for the reader. The first two are settings problems; the third is a rewrite.

Why your ad was disapproved

These are the triggers that most often produce an alcohol disapproval.

  • Targeting a country where alcohol ads are prohibited

“A campaign including markets with statutory advertising bans”

The most common cause - settings, not copy

  • Missing age targeting or under-age appeal

“Cartoon styling, or no age exclusion configured on the campaign”

A frequent trigger in newly built campaigns

  • Health, therapeutic, or performance claims

“Low-carb beer that keeps you in shape”

Regularly flagged and prohibited in every market

  • Linking alcohol to social, sexual, or professional success

“Close the deal. Then open the bottle.”

Commonly flagged and separately banned under EU codes

  • Promoting excessive consumption or driving

“Two-for-one shots all night - drink up”

    High-risk and enforced strictly

Before and after rewrites

Rejected

Low-carb beer that keeps you in shape

Compliant

A light lager at 99 calories per bottle. 4.2% ABV.

States a factual product attribute instead of a health benefit, which is prohibited in every market.

Rejected

Close the deal. Then open the bottle.

Compliant

A single-origin whisky, aged 12 years in oak.

Removes the link between drinking and professional success, one of the most consistently enforced rules.

Rejected

Two-for-one shots all night - drink up

Compliant

Tasting flight of four regional spirits, served with food.

Drops the excessive-consumption framing that both Google and EU self-regulatory codes prohibit.

How to fix and resubmit

  1. 1Check the country eligibility list first - if a targeted market prohibits alcohol advertising, remove it from the campaign before touching the copy.
  2. 2Configure age targeting to exclude under-18 or under-21 audiences depending on the market, and exclude audience segments that skew young.
  3. 3Delete any health, fitness, therapeutic, or performance claim, including calorie framing that implies a health benefit.
  4. 4Remove copy that links alcohol to success, attractiveness, courage, or driving, and remove volume-based promotions that encourage heavy drinking.
  5. 5Save the ad to re-enter review; if the block is country-eligibility based, no wording change will clear it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my alcohol ad blocked in only some countries?

Alcohol eligibility is set per country, and several markets prohibit the advertising outright while others allow it with restrictions. A multi-country campaign will show partial delivery rather than a single clean status.

Can I advertise a zero-alcohol product?

Usually yes, but drinks that resemble alcoholic beverages fall under the same policy, so a 0.0% beer is reviewed as an alcohol ad. Keep the same claim discipline and expect the same country rules to apply.

Does age targeting alone make the ad compliant?

No. Age targeting is necessary but not sufficient. The content rules apply independently, so an ad correctly targeted to adults can still be disapproved for a health claim or an excessive-consumption message.

What do EU rules add beyond Google policy?

The Audiovisual Media Services Directive and national codes restrict alcohol advertising further, particularly around minors, and several member states impose statutory limits on what may be shown at all. Google's approval is not a legal safe harbour.

How fast can I get the ad running again?

A copy fix re-enters review and is typically decided within 1 business day. An eligibility problem is resolved by changing the campaign's targeting, which takes effect as soon as the ad is re-reviewed.
